The Classification of Businesses
(Lesson 1) Lesson Objectives:
To start:
- I will understand what the 3 industrial sectors of business are
- I will be able to give local and national examples of businesses in each sector
- I will understand what the chain of production is
To start:
(Question) So, what are the 3 different sectors?
Primary Sector
The activities of businesses in this sector are all involved with producing or obtaining raw materials or natural products from the land or sea. (Question) - What types of activities do you think this could mean?
Agriculture, hunting and forestry - Production of crops, animal farming, landscape gardening and horticultural businesses
Forestry and logging - Planting, conserving and felling timber
Fishing - Fishing fleets and fish farms
Mining and quarrying - Coal, oil and natural gas extraction, quarrying for all different types of stone e.g. slate, granite, clay
(Activity) In pairs, come up with 2 local and 2 national businesses that fit into the primary sector.

Secondary Sector
This sector includes all businesses that manufacture, process or assemble products. This sector also covers energy production and the construction industry. (Question) - What types of activities do you think this could mean?
Manufacturing- all businesses that make or produce goods in the UK regardless of size or product. (Question) - What types of products are manufactured in the UK?
Engineering - light engineering companies make small items where precision is important, such as scientific equipment; heavy engineering companies make goods comprising of metals, such as ships and cranes.
Energy production - the production and distribution of electricity, gas and water. Wind farms are also included in this group
Construction - includes house builders, motorway, bridge, road and railway construction companies, and plumbers and electricians etc who work on building sites.
(Activity) In pairs, come up with 2 local and 2 national businesses that fit into the secondary sector.

Private services - these are purchased by businesses and individuals. They are offered by privately owned businesses such as retailers, accountants, banks, private clinics, publishers, transport and travel agencies to name a few.
Local and national public services - these are provided by the government and local authorities e.g. education, emergency services, housing, police, military and social services
Voluntary and not-for-profit services - these are provided by charities and voluntary groups in areas such as social care, community health care, global development, environmental and wildlife protection
