Production is the process of changing inputs, such as raw materials, energy and labour services, into goods and services that can be sold.
Job Production:
This is a method of production in which a product is supplied to meet the exact requirements of the customer.
What examples of products can you think of that are made using this production method?

Advantages:
•One off orders to customer demands
•High price can be charged
•Specifications can change even after production has started
•Workers more likely to be motivated as there is a variety of work and skills required
Disadvantages:
•Expensive due to high skill of staff = high wages
•High research, development, administration and transport costs
•Wide variety of equipment/tools required
•Lead times can be lengthy

Batch Production:
This is a method of production in which a group of similar products are produced at the same time.

Advantages:
•Batches can be changed to meet specific customer requirements
•Reduced need for costly, highly skilled staff
•Machinery can be relatively standardised = reduction in costs
Disadvantages:
•Machinery/workers may be idle between stages and between batches
•Expensive machinery may be required
•Stock levels may be high
•Less motivated staff because of repetitive work
•If batches are small – costs might still be high

Starter Activity: What is the link between technology and efficiency?
A business's efficiency increases if it can produce a larger amount of output using the same or fewer resources.
Technology is key to improving efficiency. The cost of much technology is relatively low and this enables small businesses to use it as well as big businesses. (Printers and PCs)
Expensive technology can also help reduce costs. It can produce 24/7. It may cost a lot to start with but it reduces costs in the long term.

Technology can also help businesses become more efficient when selling products.
Small businesses can use the internet to advertise and sell their products. This increases the market they can sell to and reduces advertising costs.
Technology can also lower labour costs. Machines mean no wages, training or recruitment costs.
Technology can also reduce waste and waste energy.

Quality is the extent to which a consumer is satisfied with a product.
What do you expect from a Travelodge compared to the Ritz?
Businesses have to balance producing quality goods at the cheapest price. Consumers will go elsewhere if they feel the products they are using are not quality.
